b. 1-2

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

In AI the slur does not embrace two entire bars, yet its shape and melodic context suggest that Chopin most probably had in mind such slur like in FE (→GE,EE).

Slurs in AI, contextual interpretation

FE (→GE,EE)

..

It is unclear whether the slurs of AI are an inaccurately written version of whole-bar slurs of the first editions or whether they were meant to be shorter in Chopin's intention, embracing only these three notes. We adopt the second interpretation, taking into account the fact that the undoubtedly whole-bar slur in bar 15 in AI is clearly longer. Cf. bars 63-65.

b. 21

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

The slur of AI overlooks the first two and last two semiquavers of the bar. The context indicates here a patent inaccuracy of notation.
